Defining user needs to improve EMS equipment for bariatric patients

A manufacturer of emergency medical service (EMS) equipment needed to respond to new market demands due to the increasing size/weight of the patient population their end users work with every day.
My role
Lead design researcher and strategist on a four person multidisciplinary team.
My role involved guiding the team through build-to-learn activities and defining user validated product opportunities.
The challenge
Kick-start the clients new product design by generating and testing a breadth of concepts to validate new product opportunities and prioritize user needs.
What I did
Aligned the client and team on project scope and problem statements through analysis of robust existing client data and knowledge
Co-designed, facilitated, and participated in ideation workshops and concept development
Guided the client and team through concept prioritization by planning and leading down-selection and alignment activities
Deepened and focused client knowledge of core users by planning and conducting two hour concept driven focus groups with medics and completing analysis/synthesis
The outcome
Delivered learnings and actionable insights for five concepts, and design guidelines for future concepting
Defined three opportunity areas for new product development across a spectrum of small to significant design challenges
Co-created a presentation and prepared the client team to present it to their executive gatekeepers with the intent of selling the process
